Serbia vs Italy Match Preview
When both teams clashed against each other in the first leg of this UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier, ugly scenes robbed the headlines. The match had to be abandoned after only 6 minutes of play because of rioting by Serbian hooligans.
Eventually, the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body awarded Italy with a 3-0 forfeit victory. But Cesare Prandelli can now consider Friday’s qualifier to be more or less like a friendly despite the rivalry that stands between Italy and Serbia.
The Azzurri have absolutely nothing to lose since they have already qualified for the 2012 European Championship. The pressure is strictly on the Serbians to achieve a positive result on Friday night.
Like Estonia, Slovenia and even fifth-placed Northern Ireland, the White Eagles are fighting for one and only play-off spot in Group C.
Thankfully, they have 2 matches left to make things happen. The question is whether they’ll make good use of their 90 minutes against Italy in Belgrade.
As of now, Serbia have 14 points from 8 matches, Estonia have 13 points from 9 matches and Slovenia follow behind with 11 points from a possible 27. Northern Ireland, meanwhile, have an uphill task with only 9 points after 8 match-days.
For Serbia, getting the 3 points against the Azzurri will mean securing the second place in the table. Their next challenge will be to triumph in the play-offs.
